Most people experience some degree of anxiety on occasion but it should not be a chronic condition that has a negative impact on your quality of life. There are several natural anxiety supplements you can try to help reduce your anxiety level before resorting to prescription medication. In the first part of this series of articles on natural anxiety supplements, we will look at what are the best herbal supplements for anxiety.

It is always wise to let your doctor know what herbs and supplements you are taking if you are taking any prescription drugs or if you have a medical condition. Herbs and supplements can sometimes react with medication so research the supplement well before you add it to your daily diet.

Valerian together with passionflower is a combination of herbs that is commonly found in the best herbal supplements for anxiety. Normal dosage is 100 mg valerian and 45 mg passionflower three times daily or as directed on the product label. Valerian regulates the chemical GABA, which causes a calming effect. It is especially useful for anxiety at bedtime since valerian also combats insomnia. Passionflower works in a similar way to valerian in that it increases the level of GABA in the brain, which has a calming effect. It is not as strong as valerian and is often used in combination with other natural anxiety supplements.

Lemon balm has had a reputation since ancient times as being a calming herb. It is often used in combination with other natural anxiety supplements in preparations to treat anxiety and induce sleep. Lemon balm has been studied in clinical trials at doses of 600 mg per day which was reported to increase calmness and improve mood.

Skullcap as used for the treatment of anxiety is American skullcap and is not to be confused with Chinese skullcap, which is used for other purposes. Skullcap is used to reduce nervous tension and is also an anti-spasmodic. It may be used in combination with other herbal supplements for anxiety and can be taken in tea form.

Linden flowers have been used for centuries to treat hysteria and anxiety. Linden is often added to cough syrup today because it also has qualities that fight colds and fevers. Linden is available as a liquid tincture, extract or tea infusion.

Bacopa is a herb native to India that is sometimes used to treat Alzheimer's as it has an effect upon the brain. It has been shown to reduce anxiety and boost memory. It may also provide an antioxidant effect that helps protect brain cells. Bacopa is available as a powdered herb in capsule form.

Kava kava has been proven to be one of the most effective herbal supplements for anxiety. It has been used in the Pacific Islands for thousands of years. It is also effective in improving mood and cognition. Debate surrounds the use of kava since some people have experienced liver problems while using it. It is not clear if kava itself was the cause or if it was the method of preparation. It is wise to use kava kava under the supervision of a doctor or herbalist.

Hops is often added to other natural anxiety supplements as it has a calming effect and helps treat insomnia. It is also available by itself as a powdered herb and can be made into a tea.

Holy Basil (tulsi) has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine as a herbal supplement for anxiety and stress. It produces a feeling of calm and balance. Holy Basil also helps to regulate blood sugar levels, which lessens the effects of the stress hormone cortisol.

Gotu kola is another of the natural anxiety supplements that has been used for thousands of years. It has an effect of producing mental clarity. It is called the fountain of life in China because of its many uses and legend of a herbalist who lived for 200 years by consuming the herb. This herb is also used to treat insomnia due to its calming effect. It was shown to reduce the startle response to loud noise in clinical trials. The startle response is an indicator of anxiety level. Gotu kola is available as a dried herb for making tea, powder in capsules and as a liquid tincture.

Lavender is one of the most popular herbal supplements for anxiety and is valued for its use as an essential oil. Lavender can be taken internally as a tea if it is made from dried flowers. Lavender essential oil must never be taken internally. Clinical studies have been done on lavender essential oil and they have shown the aromatic properties of lavender act to reduce anxiety. Lavender essential oil is commonly added to scented candles, body lotions and bath oils to induce relaxation.

There are several herbal supplements for anxiety you can choose from. Many of these are combined into single herbal preparations you can buy at your health food store to treat your anxiety and help you get to sleep. Be sure to read the labels before taking natural anxiety supplements so you know exactly what you are taking and be aware of the side effects. Always follow dosing directions on the label and don't take more than advised.
